Badab War - I'm In!

Na na na na, na na na na, na na na na, na na na na, BADAB! Na na na na, na na na na, na na na na, na na na na, BADAB! BADAB!!

I've decided to build a Raptors army from the Badab War and have a few squads worth of models already assembled. Years ago I started work on a Crimson Fists project but realized after painting five Tactical Marines that I was not really enjoying the experience that much. So I began experimenting with other color schemes but did not find any that I liked significantly better. I therefore set them aside to work on other more compelling interests. That was back in '05 or '06 I think.

In that time almost two squads worth of Marines and a Dreadnought from the original Crimsons Fists group were taken either for use as color tests or for other projects. What's left however should still provide for a solid core from which to build the new army. I'll likely add in the models from my AoBR set and some vehicles, then go from there. I expect with this army I'll just add units as they catch my attention rather than building to a particular list. Here though is what I'm starting with that's ready for priming:

Chapter Master/Captain with power fist and combi-melta
Chaplin with plasma pistol and croizus
10 Tactical Marines - plasma gun, lascannon, and a power weapon
8 Scouts with 2 sniper rifles and a heavy bolter
6 Assault Marines with a power weapon
6 Devastator Marines with 4 missile launchers

The miniatures are very basic Marines largely without adornment which is okay as my aim is to get this army painted quickly, whatever that means. I ordered a sheet of Raptors transfers from Forge World to save me from the embarrassment of trying to freehand the chapter badge. In the meantime I'll add these guys to the painting list and see what happens. I don't know anything about the chapter other than what's on Lexicanun (Raptors, Badab War) but I doubt any of what's assembled will be inappropriate for this army. I mainly like the color scheme for the Raptors and anticipate it being fairly straightforward to paint which would be nice.

It's been an edition or two of Codex: Space Marines since I last played vanilla marines so this should be an interesting challenge learning how to make use of what the current book can do. It does feel nice though to have finally figured out what I want to do with these miniatures after hanging onto them for so long. Also I really like the background for the Badab War so I'm excited about having found an aspect of it to add to my own hobby schemes. Neat!

Okay, that's it for now. I'm still plugging away at those trees so back to the painting for me. I hope everyone had a great weekend, bye!

  1. Awesome. I like the Raptors too, good color, sneaky dudes, and easy to justify all the bird-imagery found on many SM bits.

There's a couple of pages on them in IA9 and rules for their Chapter Master, something like swaps Combat Tactics for Stealth plus some other benefits.

  2. LOL, seriously, while reading your post, I couldn't stop thinking in that "Castle" tv-spot that used Pink's "So what" as soudtrack xD

Now, regarding your new project, what colours will you use? Will you try to match the image over there ot the GW painted raptor SM that appears in the Lexicanum?

    Good luck with this project!

  4. Ah you've been sucked in by the Raptor's green armour. They're certainly one up on the Dark Angels at the moment, at least until someone does for the Dark Angels what just happened for the Blood Angels and the Space Wolves...

I can tell you for a fact you wouldn't even be thinking about these guys if you had to use their old colour scheme. Yeuch!

As it is I have a full company of them and I'm steadily working towards another. The drab green works really well on power armour and they're fun to paint too. All the best with them!

  5. May I suggest using an alternative painting method? Nothing but washes. Check out my Raptors to see what I mean. :)

  6. @ sonsoftaurus - Cool, I was curious if the IA book changed anything for them in-game or if it was all background fluff. The sneakiness aspect sounds fun, I'll have to check out that book to figure out what direction I should take this army. Thanks!

@ Nesbet - Haha, thanks! I was confused about the color scheme variants shown, especially since the older one is listed as being from the Babad era but the green style dating to the Taros campaign. I'm going to look at the Imperial Armour book to sort it out but I'm fairly certain I'll go with the green version for my own collection. I'm hopeful that it would be easier for me to paint and with this project I'm interested in keeping things as simple as possible. That's the plan at least, these things do tend to grow beyond my original intent. Thank you, Nesbet!

@ Silar Lannanaris - I definitely want to join up with your group, seeing what you and the other Badab veterans have been working on was a large part of the motivation for me. I think it's really great what you guys are up to and also that you've set up the group to help everyone stay in touch and share their project. Very cool... thanks, Silar!

@ GDMNW - Yeah, you know it! Funny thing is that the Dark Angels were the last marine army that I gave a serious effort to so I guess at this point I'm just changing one shade of green for another. Hopefully these guys will turn out better, at least. I had forgotten about the older yellow and blue color scheme... oh my, you're right in thinking that would not have swayed me to the Raptors' side. It's good to hear you've enjoyed working on your own Raptors so much so as to make a full company of them, that's very encouraging. Thanks, GDMNW!

  7. @ Tristan - Thank you very much for pointing out your Raptors, those guys look great! I'm amazed at what can be done using washes, I'll have to try that out. Thanks!

  9. Thank you, Col. Hessler! That looks like a very helpful resource, I'll be sure to refer back to it as I work on this army. Thanks!

  12. I remember them catching my eye in third edition codex and was sad that they didn't make an appearance in the new one. Badab war looks really fun and you're already well on your way with this project. I look forward to seeing all those idle marines painted up and hitting the battlefield.

  14. @ Daemonetteboobs - I had forgotten that they were in the 3rd edition Codex, I'll have to go back and take a peek at that book. Thanks for the reminder!

@ Derina - Hey, it's great to hear from you again! I was trying to track down that pdf the other day but couldn't find it on the BoLS site. Did they take it down recently? Imperial Armour as payment for some Space Puppy painting sounds like a cool deal, but I think you should get more than that... best wishes to you for the negotiations. Thanks for stopping by, Derina!

Im going to wait for book 2 b4 I pick a chapter for the Badab war.

  16. @ sonsoftaurus - Right on, thanks for the link!

@ Derina - Thank you, I really appreciate having so many friends here to help me out. I'm sorry to hear you were having computer troubles, I recommend mass executions until the problem fixes itself. : ) Waiting for the next IA book to come out makes a lot of sense, I would have probably done so as well were I not so impetuous. I'm excited though that you're interested in picking a chapter from the Badab war and look forward to seeing your own take on the campaign. Thanks, Derina!

  17. I had a similar experience after painting most of a Rhino wherein I also decided I didn't want to paint an army of Crimson fists. The problem was that i then had a rhino which had a 'crimson' interior (which was solved by giving it to the orks...).

  18. The best colour for marines is yellow!

  19. dont forget space hulk for bourding actions.

Just asked a friend who use to work for Mongoose about a Stargate.

Im thinking Fire Hawks.... pre LOD.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @ Da Masta Cheef - Haha, at least that's an advantage to collecting Orks!

@ Bartender - No argument from me on that account, Bartender. For now I think I should stick to more forgiving color schemes, but I hope to someday take on that challenge of painting an Imperial Fists or DIY yellow marine army. I am getting to practice some with Stonecutters, though. Thanks!

@ Derina - Yeah, that's one of things I'm really excited about with gaming the Badab war. For years I've wanted to play those types of missions and even tried writing some house rules for it a few editions ago. My rules sucked so I look forward to seeing what the FW folks have developed. I hope you plan to write about your Badab project as it comes together and post updates, Fire Hawks would be very cool!

  22. Sweet, either way it sounds like it will be a good week for you! Along with the sheet of Raptors transfers I also ordered the first Badab book so hopefully I'll be able to start reading it soon. It will be fun to compare notes with you and the other Badab aficionados, please let me know if you discover anything cool. Thanks, Derina!

  24. Got my book. :P I think the GW staffer was flerting with me...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Haha! I'm sure that was an entertaining encounter, I would have loved to see that play out. "So... can I show you my Tyrant's Claw?" I'm very happy you were able to get your book, even if it did come at such a high cost! I'm jealous, I can't wait to start reading mine once it arrives in a week or two. Take care, Derina!

  26. Your guys are olive green and the cammo is a near black grey .... Still not made my mind up yet might go with the Sons of Madusa

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sons of Medusa is the other chapter that strongly tempted me, I really like the way they look and their iconography as well. I don't know anything else about them but they definitely look cool to me. Thank you for the info about the Raptors, I was wondering about the different color schemes I had seen for them. Initially I was all set to go with the green until I noticed in that layout from the old White Dwarf the blue and yellow scheme listed as being from the Badab war. I'm relieved to know that olive green is the right way to go if I want to stay consistent with the updated fluff. Thanks for all the help, Derina, I really appreciate it!

  28. forgot to say get some rust powder as there are some picts of your guys in rusty armour.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Neat! All my marines in the past have looked like they were fresh from the parade ground so this will be a good change of pace. I was already thinking about having them appear more like they're on campaign so going at them with the weathering powders fits nicely with what I had in mind. I've never worked with them before but this should be an interesting experience learning to use them. Right on, thanks Derina!
